Defense contractor consolidation a security concern: U.S. Air Force acquisition head Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article

The Chronicle Herald
The number of major U.S. defense contractors has shrunk to the point of becoming a national security concern, according to the U.S. Air Force’s acquisition head, who said his service needed to have more frequent competitions to benefit smaller companies. The comment came after U.S. President Donald Trump this month expressed concern that United Technologies Corp’s plan to combine its aerospace business with that of Raytheon Co could harm competition and make it more difficult to negotiate defense contracts. The $121 billion deal would be the sector’s biggest-ever merger.  READ MORE

RAFBF

Dear Friend,

The RAF Benevolent Fund has today launched a major new campaign in its centenary year. We are urging the public to help us repay the debt we all owe to our RAF veterans and their families who are in need of help. In particular, we need to reach out to the National Service and World War Two veterans, before it’s too late. They put on the uniform of our country when we needed them to, the least we can do is be there for them when they themselves need our help.  READ MORE

Story by Sharon Adams

War correspondent Matthew Halton covered the Second World War for the CBC. Here is an extract from a recording of what he saw and heard during the Canadian attack on Carpiquet village and airfield July 4, 1944.

“This is Matthew Halton of the CBC speaking from France.

“It’s two minutes to five in Normandy and the sun hasn’t risen yet over us or over the Germans 800 yards away. It will rise on a fearful scene because at 5 o’clock precisely the Canadians are going to attack. And they’ll attack with the most enormous concentration of fire ever put down on a small objective….

Parades. Flags. Fireworks. Let’s not forget military heroes who protect it all.

And another item from a fellow veterans organization in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Honor those who served this 4th of July
Dear Michael Barbour,

As we enjoy the fireworks bursting overhead this evening, let’s not forget that every day, men and women proudly answer the call to protect our cherished way of life. And for them, the sights and sounds of freedom are very different.

Weapons firing, bombs blasting, engines roaring … Love of Country comes at a very high price.

To honor their service to our Nation, we’ve been challenging our patriotic members and supporters like you to help us raise $1776 EVERY DAY this week!

I Accept the Challenge
Without our brave service members, there would be no independence. That’s why we celebrate their sacrifices every single day of the year through programs that Commemorate, Educate and Serve.

In fact, we’ve just sent out a huge shipment of care packages to our troops overseas, providing a little bit of home and a little bit of comfort while they’re deployed during the holiday.

But we can’t do these things without your support.

So before you celebrate our great Country today with your family and friends, please celebrate our military heroes by making a gift and help us reach our $1776 goal.

Sincerely,

Jan C. Huly
Lieutenant General, USMC (Ret)
President and CEO
