UN warns of a “global refugee crisis,” urges peace and stability

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees is urging world leaders to boost their efforts to promote “peace, stability and co-operation” in the face of a global refugee crisis.

The agency says refugee numbers driven by violence, persecution, war and human-rights violations have been increasing for the past decade, rising four by per cent from 2019 to a record 82.4 million in 2020.

Their ancestors fought beside the British in the Seven Years’ War, the American Revolution and the War of 1812. In 1885, they navigated Africa’s Nile River on a British military rescue mission and volunteered for Canada’s first international expeditionary force at the dawn of the 20th century, fighting with the British in the Second Boer War in South Africa.
