Fall Reading
In our latest blog post, the DML is pleased to present a book preview and author interview by Pastured Moose, Erika Wah. And she’s interviewed the DML’s own David Stewart—another Pastured Moose and the author of a new expat memoir, True North, Down South: Tales of a Professional Canadian in America.
Here’s an excerpt:
EW. There are 28 essays that make up the chapters in this book. How did it all start? What was the first of your Canadian-American Tales?
DWS: I was on a road trip with my American-born teenage son through my home province of Quebec in 2018. I began to see Canada through my son’s eyes, and started jotting ideas down, like a travelogue. So the book opens with me feeling nostalgic for my childhood in the asbestos mining town where I grew up. From there, each chapter unfolds by exploring different experiences of national identity and belonging that were all inside of me. At one point, I consider how Quebec’s separatist politics may have caused me to cling even closer to my Canadian identity. At another, I reflect on my Scottish roots and how I used genealogy to express my Canadianness as well.
Grab your coffee and bagel and head on over to our blog for the full interview. Excuse our shameless plug for David’s work: True North, Down South is available now to pre-order (release date is Sept 20, 2022).
Finally, don’t miss a fall full of great Canadian fun coming up. Trivia Night is next week, then turkey feasting and hockey, plus a panel discussion for us serious types, and lots more of interest to our Canadian community.
Thanks for reading!

DML Thanksgiving Dinner with Berkeley Canadian Studies!
SAVE THE DATE: SAT, OCT 8th (Berkeley)
Yes, that’s a turkey dinner. At least we haven’t started with the halloween candy!
Kids back in school? Summer trip to the cottage a distant memory? That last mountain bike ride still showing some dirt on your bike? The best part about September in the Bay Area, as a Canadian, is that now we get to re-summer! But why, do you ask, do we have a picture of a turkey if it’s still summer?!
Here’s a hint: for some of us, our favourite event of the year is the DML Canadian Thanksgiving AND it is just around the corner. October 8th will come fast. If you were sad to have missed out on the DML Canada Day Picnic (which over-sold and still sold out), you won’t want to miss these tickets!

SF Bay Area Curling is gearing up their fall leagues – head on over to their website to learn about membership or to get started with learning to curl: https://bayareacurling.com/.
The fall semester at UC Berkeley Canadian Studies is underway! Go 🇨🇦 Bears! There are over 460 Canadian International students at Cal, and the Canadian Studies Program is committed to educating on Canada. Berkeley students are taking these courses this fall:
-
“Comparative Equality Law”: This course examines how the law protects equality rights in different jurisdictions. Canadian laws will be discussed in a global, comparative context.
-
“Language and Identity”: This course examines the role of language in the construction of social identities, and how language is tied to various forms of symbolic power at the national and international levels. This course will use Canada as a case study.
-
“Monsters and Modernity”: This class delves into fears and anxieties behind modern literary “monsters”, and what they say about society. Margaret Atwood’s The Handmaid’s Tale will be a highlighted text.
-
“Native Americans in North America to 1900”: This course will provide an ethnohistorical analysis of America’s original inhabitants and their interactions with Europeans and Euro-Americans, emphasizing an Indian perspective.
