Canada and the Second World War at Sea

Active on many fronts during the Second World War, the Royal Canadian Navy played its best-known and arguably most crucial role in helping to keep Allied shipping lanes open in the Atlantic. Meanwhile, Canadian merchant ships and merchant sailors transported vital supplies to Allied forces and populations around the world. On Canada’s home front, maritime losses – including civilian passengers – were felt across the country, while naval imagery appeared in fundraising and propaganda materials. Canadians built ships, weapons, and equipment, or were encouraged to provide support through their volunteer war, its events, and its consequences on the waters.

Canadian trainer watches efforts pay dividends in Ukraine

STORY BY STEPHEN J. THORNE

Corporal Brian Tite, a Canadian signals specialist, served two tours training Ukrainian soldiers in the kind of technologies that are now contributing to their stout defence against invading forces from Russia.

The International Peacekeeping and Security Centre near the western city of Lviv was his home and office for more than a year in 2019 and 2021. It was destroyed March 13 by Russian cruise missiles; 35 people were killed and 134 wounded.

Lessons from WWI promo

Please join us for this timely event.

We have assembled leading WWI historians and experts who will explore the ways that an understanding of WWI might help us avoid slipping into a larger and more devastating world conflict through the crisis in Ukraine. No one intended WWI. What are the parallels? What lessons from WWI can be applied to the situation in Europe today?

Even if you can’t attend live, please register so we can notify you when this webinar becomes available online and on-demand.

Thank you.

Raising Funds for Humanitarian Relief

Humanitarian Relief

The idea for the webinar is to draw parallels between 1914 and 2022. Here is another!

In 1914, Germany’s aggression rolling into Belgium, and then into Europe, caused a massive humanitarian crisis displacing millions. Today, Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has caused over 10 million Ukrainians to flee their homes. Desperate families of women, children and elderlies need shelter, food and care.

So we are asking you – our friends and the entire WWI community of interest to help. All funds will go directly to provide shelter, food and care for displaced Ukrainian refugees.

They need our help.

You can also learn the stories of ordinary men and women from five key industries who made their mark on history – and find out who you could have been. Head over and meet some of the people we commemorate – then share your story on social media using #ExtraordinaryTimes.

We are also running a fantastic programme of special talks, tours and events taking place across the UK, France, Belgium, Netherlands and Malta throughout the week.

Many events are taking place at CWGC cemeteries and monuments and we will also be popping up at locations across the UK, so come and say hello. Our events list is constantly updated, so please check in regularly to see what events are happening near you here.
