THE RETURN TO IRL

Things have been busy over here as the C100 community begins to gather once again (safely) in person. From an evening in Manhattan celebrating the Founding Members of C100’s New York Chapter to a series of dinners across Toronto and the San Francisco Bay Area co-hosted by Charter Members and Host Partners, the magic of in-person events begins to return.

#C100NYC IS OFFICIALLY HERE!

Last week, C100’s Founding Members community in NYC gathered to safely celebrate the launch of this new Chapter. With the growing, vibrant tech scene growing in New York, Canadians can be found everywhere you look from founders and operators to inventors and investors.

While C100 Members are based across all corners of the globe, from St. Johns to Los Angeles and San Francisco to Singapore, C100 New York marks a special part of this chapter (yes, very much a double entendre). Fun fact: New York has the largest population of Canadians outside of Canada and we’d like to sincerely thank all of our Founding Members who are helping make this feel a little bit like home for Canadian tech leaders living in the Big Apple.

Know a great Canadian expat who should be a part of this community (*ahem perhaps yourself*)? Apply today.

C100 DINNER SERIES

Over the past several weeks, C100 Members across the San Francisco Bay Area and Toronto gathered for small, intimate dinners to connect with fellow Canadian leaders.

A heartfelt thank you to all the Co-Hosts and Host Partners who helped make these a success; Janet Bannister & Silicon Valley Bank; Allen and Eva Lau, Osler Hoskin & Harcourt LLP; Anthony Lee & Toronto Global; Chris O’Neill and Wilson Sonsini; and Sean Lynch.

Read more about these dinners on our events page.

Veterans’ Week 2021 | Semaine des vétérans 2021

An item from the RCAF Association that may be of interest to members.

Le texte en français suit…

Dear colleagues,

Every year, in the lead up to Remembrance Day, we mark Veterans’ Week from November 5 to 11. This week presents an opportunity for Canadians to honour those who have served our country in times of war, military conflict and peace. We recognize your organization’s commitment and support to Veterans and their families and thank you for your continued collaboration in promoting remembrance initiatives.

2021 marks a number of significant military milestones from the First World War to present  day operations, including the 10th Anniversary of service in Afghanistan. As such, this year’s theme is “Service, courage and sacrifice—at home, around the world and across generations.”

This Veterans’ Week, encourage your contacts to take a moment to think about the freedoms we all enjoy, thanks to the brave Canadians who have put our country before themselves. On November 8—Indigenous Veterans Day—we recognize the many contributions of First Nations, Métis and Inuit throughout our military history.

As the ongoing pandemic is still affecting our traditional ceremonies of remembrance, it is more important than ever to hear and share the stories of the remarkable legacies that our service people have built over the course of Canada’s long military history.

Again this year, we will launch a new series of our Faces of Freedom podcast, where you can hear Veterans share their stories directly. You can also read a wide variety of them via our Faces of Freedom and They proudly served profiles. Some featured are Veterans of the war years; others are Veterans of peace support and humanitarian operations that took them to all corners of the world. Some Veterans served for decades; others were honourably discharged just months into their military careers. They are of diverse races and identities—some were born here, others were not. But one thing that Canada’s Veterans all share is the honour of having worn a uniform for their country.

Visit veterans.gc.ca/CanadaRemembers to learn about more ways to honour the service, courage and sacrifice of all those who have served Canada. Let’s express our gratitude and inspire our colleagues, friends and families to participate.

Together, let’s show how #CanadaRemembers.

Sincerely,

Paul Thomson

Ensemble, montrons comment #LeCanadaSeSouvient.

Cordialement,

Paul Thomson

Militarization, not commercialization, is the problem in space

Story by Stephen J. Thorne

Recent jaunts into near space by entrepreneurs, actor William Shatner and the ultra-wealthy have inspired waves of criticism among those who claim their fortune could be better spent on Earth.

How, they say, can Jeff Bezos and Elon Musk spend billions on next-generation space technology when so many in the world are starving? How can the privileged few blow US$250,000 a head for 10 minutes outside Earth’s atmosphere—barely long enough to say they’ve been there—when others are in need?

The liberation of Campobasso

Story by Sharon Adams

Firmly established on the Italian mainland in the fall of 1943, the 1st Canadian Infantry Division turned its sights on Campobasso in southern Italy, rumoured to be the headquarters of German Field Marshal Albert Kesselring.

“With it in our hands, the Allied Force in Italy would no longer have to use the roads of the Foggia plains, some 50 miles (80 kilometres) to the south…and we would have the mobility required for the forthcoming fight for the German winter line,” recalled Captain G.K. Wright of the Royal Canadian Regiment on The Regimental Rogue website.

+ 2022 Renewal Stickers were mailed in August
The 2022 Member renewal stickers were mailed to all Branches in late August for all members who paid for 2021 by July 30, 2021. If you have not received your 2022 stickers, please contact member services.
+ Verify and welcome new members at your Branch
85% of new members joining online are selecting a local Branch to join! Branches are encouraged to reach out to new member applicants within 30 days of their application to let them know the process for their application or, if approved, welcome them to the Branch.
The Membership Committee’s recommended 30-day application review period is a suggested timeline to ensure our organization is maintaining strong customer service practices for new members wishing to join and support the Legion. If a Branch is unable to meet the suggested 30-day period for a General Meeting or Executive Committee review of the application, it may still follow its own process to approve/decline a member and the procedure for that continues to follow the communicated policy.
Be sure to check your Legion.ca email account for notifications of new members or check the New Online Member Report on your Branch profile on the Member Services Website.
+ Reminder: Digital Membership Card coming soon
Coming later this fall, new and returning Legion members will have the choice of the traditional plastic card or an electronic membership card downloadable to a digital wallet. These digital cards will allow the Legion to save time and money producing, mailing and replacing plastic cards. Stay tuned for more details.
