A glimmer of hope for Afghan interpreters left behind

Story by Stephen J. Thorne

The U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan has profound implications for more than 100 Afghans believed to have worked alongside Canadian troops during the years they operated inside the country’s borders.

The American pullout has refocused attention on the plight of an estimated 115 so-called LECs (locally employed civilians) who missed out on a brief resettlement program instituted by the former Conservative government.

Jerry Potts and the March West

Story by Sharon Adams

In September 1874, a North West Mounted Police patrol heading west to Fort Whoop-Up to rein in the violence of the whiskey trade, hired Métis scout and interpreter Jerry Potts.

For the next 22 years he was an invaluable asset to the force, arguably as responsible for the peaceful settlement of the West as the Mounties he served.

Portraits of Prince Phillip
With the passing of His Royal Highness the Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, we received questions on whether Branches should remove the portrait of HRH. A representative from the Office of the Secretary to the Governor General of Canada (OSGG) indicated that, as HRH was not the Monarch, there are no guidelines for removal or replacement. It is at the discretion of the organization when to remove the portrait. At this time, the OSGG has chosen not to remove the portrait, and indicated there would be no breach of protocol to simply leave the portrait as is.
Historically, the last time the consort of a reigning Sovereign died was 1861, the Prince Consort, Albert. For Government Houses around the then Empire, his portraits were gradually removed to less prominent places over the year following his death.

Branch 25 – 90th Anniversary Picnic

After almost 18 months of virtual events, Royal Canadian Legion Branch 25 representing the San Francisco Bay Area is hosting a picnic to celebrate the 90th anniversary.  Chartered on 12 August 1931, the San Francisco Branch is the sole remaining branch of the 13 branches that once formed the Northern Zone of the Western United States Command of the Royal Canadian Legion.

The picnic will be held at the Marsh Hawk picnic area in the Miller/Knox Regional Shoreline Park.  The picnic will begin around noon on Saturday, 21 August 2021

Given the variety of food preferences and dietary restrictions, attendees are asked to bring their own picnic items.  The branch will provide beverages for everyone, as well as something sweet and celebratory.

Please register at https://tinyurl.com/rcl-branch25-picnic or by calling Branch President Michael Barbour at 203-997-6330.

We look forward to celebrating this milestone with our membership, the U.S. Naval Sea Cadet Corps – Arkansas Division, and others in the Canadian ex-pat community.

ALEXANDER FITZGERALD-BLACK

The Air Support Rollercoaster: Canadian Soldiers’ Morale in Normandy

July 14th, 7:30 PM ET

The webinar is FREE on Zoom.

Registration is required. You do not need a Zoom account to watch.

Soldiers’ morale on the frontline relies on many factors. Casualty rates, time spent in heavy combat, news from home, weather and terrain, food, and general health are all relevant. The role of air forces should also get our consideration. In this talk, Alex Fitzgerald-Black will tackle two questions. First, what did the Canadian soldier think about the air support he received in Normandy? Second, what were the consequences of this support for morale? Canadian war diaries and memoirs of the fighting on the ground – including George G. Blackburn’s classic The Guns of Normandy – contain myriad compliments and criticisms about what the Allied air force was doing during the Battle of Normandy. The compliments (peaks) and criticisms (valleys) present an undulating curve of Canadian soldiers’ morale in Normandy. Fitzgerald-Black’s presentation will examine this “rollercoaster” in a sweeping tour of Canadian army operations from Juno Beach to the Falaise Gap.

ALEXANDER FITZGERALD-BLACK is the Operations and Outreach Manager at the Juno Beach Centre Association, the charity that owns and operates Canada’s Second World War Museum on the D-Day landing beaches in Normandy, France. He holds a Master of Arts in military history (University of New Brunswick) and a Master of Arts in public history (Western University).
