76 Years Ago Today…

We received this anniversary item from one of our fellow veterans organizations in the Bay Area earlier today.

76 years ago on Iwo Jima…

On this date in 1945, Marines and sailors landed on Iwo Jima with the purpose of capturing the island and its two air fields.  The invasion, designated “Operation Detachment,” saw some of the fiercest fighting of WWII in the Pacific.  The US was victorious in their mission but saw 26,000 casualties including 6,800 deaths.

A storied and important battle for the United States and the Marine Corps, the Battle of Iwo Jima is an anniversary we commemorate each year at Marines’ Memorial. Due to the ongoing pandemic and restrictions on gathering, unfortunately we were not able to hold the event in 2021. Instead, our team would like to honor this anniversary by sharing two videos with you. “To the Shores of Iwo Jima,” was recorded by Marine, Navy, and Coast Guard cameramen and can be found on the US National Archives YouTube page HERE. In addition, we welcome you to view the 75th Anniversary presentation held at Marines’ Memorial last year with guest speaker Col Peter Underwood, USMC (Ret).

We have high hopes that the 77th Anniversary will be in our normal in-person format!  Until we see you again, stay safe and Semper Fi!

Mission First, People Always

An item from a fellow veterans organization in the Bay Area.

Dear Michael Barbour,
Taking on a new role in the middle of a national crisis is a daunting task — but when did a challenge ever stop a Marine? When I took over as President and CEO of the Marines’ Memorial back in November, I knew I had big shoes to fill. I was excited to roll up my sleeves and get to work, building on the legacy of the Marines’ Memorial. I knew I was joining a high-impact, close-knit team — a family — and I have not been disappointed. The team continues to perform the herculean task of keeping the doors open, and you — the members — have heard the call and responded in kind. Thank you!
You have all made me feel so welcome during these first few months.
Mission First, People Always. It’s a mantra I lived by during my time in the Marines, but it’s no less true here at the Marines’ Memorial. You have shown me the importance of people to the success of a mission — especially when it’s a mission as important as CommemoratingEducating and Serving our military community.
Thanks to you, this mission was a success, even as the Club faced its most challenging year in its 75-year history! I asked for your support via letters and emails so many times, and you always came through. That commitment and loyalty gave me pride in knowing we would get through this crisis. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.
We are recovering slowly but surely — due entirely to the support of members, donors, guests, and friends like you — and the Club is ready to bring back the amenities the members enjoy so much. In keeping with the city of San Francisco rules, it will be a gradual return, and begin as soon as we are allowed.
We have a long road to recovery. We face 2021 together, and know that everyone at the Marines’ Memorial is ready to welcome you back.
I’m humbled to be a part of this team. You make the Marines’ Memorial such a special place — thank you.
Semper fi!

75 Years In The Making: Marines’ Memorial

An item from a fellow veterans organization in the Bay Area.

Marines' Memorial: 75 Years in the Making

As we approach the Diamond Anniversary of the Marines’ Memorial this November, we’re taking the time to reflect on the past 75 years. Through wars, recessions, civil unrest and, most recently, a worldwide pandemic, the Marines’ Memorial has stood resolute and unwavering in honor of all who have served.

The history of our nation and our Armed Forces are the lifeblood of this Living Memorial. Around every corner, in every hall, on every floor, our mission to Commemorate, Educate and Serve shines brightly.

To celebrate, we invite you to join us on this historical commemoration of your Club “Marines’ Memorial: 75 Years in the Making.” From now until November, you will receive monthly emails giving insight into a special part of the history of your Club. The stories told and the memories made under the roof at 609 Sutter are priceless. Thank you for an incredible 75 years!

For the first installment, we wanted to take you back (WAY BACK!) to before World War II and the need for a Living Memorial in San Francisco arose.  This building we know and love was something VERY different before our founding in 1946…

Women's Building

In 1923, the City and County Federation of Women’s Clubs decided to erect a building “at the Southwest corner of Sutter and Mason” and “designed as a club home for the women of the State.” Originally budgeted for $1,000,000, this building took a little more than 3 years to complete, finally costing $1,750,000 with a grand opening held on May 31, 1927.

The purpose of the San Francisco Women’s Club is very much the same as the Marines’ Memorial! The many rooms, auditoriums and dining facilities were for “lectures, forums and discussions of public interest.” Once opened, there was “not a woman in California but will find some features of interest to her…as an exclusive place to dine and entertain…offer personal contact with cultural ideas and people… (and) out-of-town women will find it a comfortable home, admirably situated in the heart of city life.”

First Plank

Women's Building

During World War II, the then-named Western Women’s Club became a part of The United States Naval Reserve (Women’s Reserve), better known as WAVES (Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service). The women of WAVES hosted many members of the United States Marine Corps through WWII until those same Marines purchased the building in early 1946.

Without the women who began the planning for this building in the Roaring 20’s, who knows what our modern-day Marines’ Memorial would look like! Take a look at some of the original newspaper articles about the women’s club below!  To see larger versions of these and other articles, visit our Marines’ Memorial Foundation Facebook page HERE.
