Dear Comrade,

Here at Wreaths Across America headquarters in Maine, it has been a month full of fellowship, sharing, learning, and teaching. I’ve been thinking about the heartfelt stories that are shared in answer to one question: “What is your why?”

Thank you to the 2nd graders at Eliot Elementary School in Maine. These kids have a good start, but there is so much for them to learn as they begin using our new curriculum. We would love to hear from students across the country about what these words mean to them.

MEET THE AUTHOR PANEL

Thursday 13 October 2022 at 6pm

(Doors Open: 5:30pm)

Commandant’s Room (11th Floor)

Marines’ Memorial Association & Foundation invites you to our next Meet The Author Panel featuring a trio of accomplished OIF/OEF Veteran authors at the Marines’ Memorial Club & Hotel for a short presentation by each author, followed by a moderated Question & Answer period.

Come and hear these recent Veterans discuss their books and provide a perspective of recent combat operations and veterans’ affairs.

Major Fred Galvin, USMC (Ret) served twenty-six years as a Marine infantry, reconnaissance, force reconnaissance, and special operator in Afghanistan, Iraq, and other hotspots. His recent book, ‘A Few Bad Men’ is a non-fiction account of the first Marine Special Operations Task Force that was deployed to combat in Afghanistan and was caught in a Taliban-coordinated complex ambush and provides the full story of the case including the declassified courtroom testimonies from the most highly publicized war crimes trial during the war in Afghanistan.

Amy Forsythe is an award-winning military journalist who has served five combat deployments covering military operations in Iraq and Afghanistan. Born and raised in Santa Rosa, CA, she joined the Marine Corps in 1993 as a combat correspondent. Her imagery from covering military operations around the world has been featured in numerous international and national media outlets. Her photos and video content continue to be used for historical purposes in documentaries and academic research. Her first book. ‘Heroes Live Here: A Tribute to Camp Pendleton Marines Since 9/11’ started as a passion project to showcase the memorials and markers on Camp Pendleton which has turned into a collaborative work of art that honors our fallen heroes of the post-9/11 generation.

Major Scott Huesing, USMC (Ret) is no stranger to the Marines’ Memorial Club & Hotel. He is a former infantry officer with over 24 years of enlisted and commissioned service including 10 deployments and operations in over 60 countries, during which he planned, led, and conducted hundreds of combat missions under some of the most austere and challenging conditions. In his 2018 book, ‘Echo in Ramadi: The Firsthand Story of US Marines in Iraq’s Deadliest City,’ Huesing transports readers to the deadly streets of Iraq in a visceral, gripping portrayal of urban combat. Bound together by honor and surrounded by chaos, his Marines battled on the frontlines of a war without rules against an elusive, ruthless enemy who wore no uniforms and showed little mercy. ‘Echo in Ramadi’ is an unforgettable portrayal of war that will leave readers amazed and moved by the experiences and emotions of combat.

CANADIAN COMMUNITY

Thanks, eh!

If you celebrate Canadian Thanksgiving here in the US you might be the envy of American friends and family who think Canadians get the better timing. We are already full of gratitude for a fall season abundant with feasts and treats. And, we are also grateful for:

  1. The end of all Covid-19 restrictions traveling to Canada starting on October 1st!
  2. The strong US dollar so we can fill a suitcase (15 dozen apparently) with our favourite Montreal-style bagels on our latest trip north.
  3. Remembering Queen Elizabeth II: her life of service, her love of animals, and how cool she looks on a moose, thanks to Canadian artist Charlie Pachter back in ’72.
  4. NASA’s Double Asteroid Redirection Test knocking Dimorphis off it’s path. If you love all things space, check out this Canadian VR company experience, The Infinite, coming to the East Bay in October.
  5. Turkey dinner. Some of us just can’t get enough even if we are going to the DML Thanksgiving dinner, so get 20% off a turkey and free shipping from Cream Co. Meats with code BUTTERTART at checkout. More details below.
  6. Wine discounts from Kascadia Wine Merchants. Use code DMLWINEFAN to get 20% off all products (minimum order $18.00). Until October 31st.

À votre santé, tout le monde!
