Gratitude of the Netherlands Government

If you know of someone who qualifies, please reach out to the folks at the RCAF Association.

The RCAF Association in co-operation with the Department of National Defence/Canadian Forces (DND/CF) has offered to help the government of the Netherlands send flowers to our ageing veterans of the Second World War campaign to liberate the Netherlands.

If you are caring for one of our eligible veterans, or if you know of a veteran who participated in the campaign or a family caring for a loved one who happened to be involved in the liberation of the Netherlands, please consider reaching out to us and let us know of the street address to which the flowers can be sent.

Please reply to director@airforce.ca with the information needed.

Thank you for your very kind consideration and co-operation.

76 Years Ago Today…

We received this anniversary item from one of our fellow veterans organizations in the Bay Area earlier today.

Flag Raising

76 years ago on Iwo Jima…

On this date in 1945, Marines and sailors landed on Iwo Jima with the purpose of capturing the island and its two air fields.  The invasion, designated “Operation Detachment,” saw some of the fiercest fighting of WWII in the Pacific.  The US was victorious in their mission but saw 26,000 casualties including 6,800 deaths.

A storied and important battle for the United States and the Marine Corps, the Battle of Iwo Jima is an anniversary we commemorate each year at Marines’ Memorial. Due to the ongoing pandemic and restrictions on gathering, unfortunately we were not able to hold the event in 2021. Instead, our team would like to honor this anniversary by sharing two videos with you. “To the Shores of Iwo Jima,” was recorded by Marine, Navy, and Coast Guard cameramen and can be found on the US National Archives YouTube page HERE. In addition, we welcome you to view the 75th Anniversary presentation held at Marines’ Memorial last year with guest speaker Col Peter Underwood, USMC (Ret).

We have high hopes that the 77th Anniversary will be in our normal in-person format!  Until we see you again, stay safe and Semper Fi!

Canada Remembers CAF Around the World / Le Canada se souvient des FAC autour du monde

This webinar on Monday may be of interest to many of our members.

On February 22, please join Veterans Affairs Canada online to learn about a vision on the future of remembrance and recognition in Canada.

The virtual event will feature the Minister of Veterans Affairs, Dr Lee Windsor and Captain (ret’d) Hélène Le Scelleur who will outline how this new approach will better serve the Veteran community.

In the coming months, Veterans and members of the public will be consulted on this new strategy to give valuable input on how we can all best recognize and commemorate Canada’s military, peacekeeping and humanitarian missions.

Calling All EDUCATORS… and LEARNERS: Friday, February 26, 2021, 1pm EST

You are invited to register to join us live or access the webinar on-demand

Please Join our roundtable discussion with WWI educators as we explore their experiences and challenges in bringing World War I History into “classrooms, online, and hybrid environments” all of which is a part of 2021 education.

We assembled a group of educators from different parts of the US to explore issues about teaching WWI from a real-world practical perspective:

  • How teachers are adapting in teaching especially social studies, during the Pandemic
  • How do differing State standards affect teaching WWI
  • Practical practices, clever ideas and limitations when teaching WWI
  • How local WWI memorials can provide community engagement learning

We also explored and discussed the education tools created by the Doughboy Foundation during and after the Centennial of WWI. This includes the USB thumb drive Website “How WWI Changed America;” specific WWI handouts for the classroom to prompt learning and conversation; using the WWI Genealogy Research Guide to tie WWI into local community learning and the innovative “WWI Memorial Virtual Explorer App” that provides an interactive augmented reality field trip to the new WWI Memorial in Washington, D.C.

Even if you cannot attend live we invite you to register for this FREE 2021 Doughboy Foundation webinar for educators and learners about the challenges, opportunities and importance of teaching and learning about “The War That Changed the World”.

We will post the webinar as video-on-demand and send the link to all registrants whether you were able to join us live or later.

Many thanks to the supporters of The Doughboy Foundation for making this webinar possible. To learn more about the Doughboy Foundation, please visit https://doughboyfoundation.org .
