Reminder: Commemoration Day Virtual Service – Saturday, 01 July 2023

While July 1st is Canada Day, for Newfoundlanders and Labradorians it is also Memorial Day or Commemoration Day – a day when we remember the tragic events of the Battle of Beaumont Hamel.  The first of July 1916 was the opening day of the Battle of the Somme, when 806 members of the Royal Newfoundland Regiment climbed out of their trenches and went “over the top” at 8:45am as part of the battle of Beaumont-Hamel. In less than an hour, the regiment was devastated, most killed or wounded within the first 20 minutes of the battle. The next morning, only 68 soldiers answered the roll call. Commemoration Day was established in 1917, just one year later.

Share the story of a 907 km trek for Veterans

The Legion’s National Headquarters is proud to release A Ruck to Remember, a video story highlighting the extensive hiking and fundraising journey taken by three men in support of the Legion’s Operation: Leave the Streets Behind program – the Ontario division.
Watch video on youtube.
Ruck to Remember founder Lino DiJulio speaks about the help available to Veterans at local Legion Branches, and the importance of getting involved with your local Legion.
“There are a lot of well-meaning people in these Branches who have a huge heart for Veterans; they cannot help a generation of people they do not have access to. If you want the Legion to help you, they want to help you, but you’ve got to engage, you’ve got to be present.”
We encourage all Branches to share this video with your members and the public.
Special thanks to Ontario Command and the Owen Sound Branch for their great assistance and participation in the production of the story.
