Marines’ Memorial Association & Foundation invites you to our next Meet The Author Panel featuring a trio of accomplished OIF/OEF Veteran authors at the Marines’ Memorial Club & Hotel for a short presentation by each author, followed by a moderated Question & Answer period.

Come and hear these recent Veterans discuss their books and provide a perspective of recent combat operations and veterans’ affairs.

Major Fred Galvin, USMC (Ret) served twenty-six years as a Marine infantry, reconnaissance, force reconnaissance, and special operator in Afghanistan, Iraq, and other hotspots. His recent book, ‘A Few Bad Men’ is a non-fiction account of the first Marine Special Operations Task Force that was deployed to combat in Afghanistan and was caught in a Taliban-coordinated complex ambush and provides the full story of the case including the declassified courtroom testimonies from the most highly publicized war crimes trial during the war in Afghanistan.

Amy Forsythe is an award-winning military journalist who has served five combat deployments covering military operations in Iraq and Afghanistan. Born and raised in Santa Rosa, CA, she joined the Marine Corps in 1993 as a combat correspondent. Her imagery from covering military operations around the world has been featured in numerous international and national media outlets. Her photos and video content continue to be used for historical purposes in documentaries and academic research. Her first book. ‘Heroes Live Here: A Tribute to Camp Pendleton Marines Since 9/11’ started as a passion project to showcase the memorials and markers on Camp Pendleton which has turned into a collaborative work of art that honors our fallen heroes of the post-9/11 generation.

Major Scott Huesing, USMC (Ret) is no stranger to the Marines’ Memorial Club & Hotel. He is a former infantry officer with over 24 years of enlisted and commissioned service including 10 deployments and operations in over 60 countries, during which he planned, led, and conducted hundreds of combat missions under some of the most austere and challenging conditions. In his 2018 book, ‘Echo in Ramadi: The Firsthand Story of US Marines in Iraq’s Deadliest City,’ Huesing transports readers to the deadly streets of Iraq in a visceral, gripping portrayal of urban combat. Bound together by honor and surrounded by chaos, his Marines battled on the frontlines of a war without rules against an elusive, ruthless enemy who wore no uniforms and showed little mercy. ‘Echo in Ramadi’ is an unforgettable portrayal of war that will leave readers amazed and moved by the experiences and emotions of combat.

Militaries, governments get serious about UFOs

STORY BY STEPHEN J. THORNE

On the night of July 30, 2021, a Canadian military transport out of Trenton, Ont., and a KLM Royal Dutch Airlines flight heading from Boston to Amsterdam both reported an unidentified flying object over the Gulf of St. Lawrence.

According to the Civil Aviation Daily Occurrence Reporting System, report No. 2021A0440, the two aircraft called in “a bright green flying object.”

“It flew into a cloud, then disappeared,” said the single-page document. “No impact to operations.

“CFC4003 was at F300 [30,000 feet] and thought it was flying; while KLM618 was at F400 and thought it was space debris. There was no indication of the direction of movement, speed or any identifying marks.”

The Spanish flu ravaged Canada and its soldiers

STORY BY SHARON ADAMS

In October 1918, about 1,000 Canadians a day were dying of the Spanish flu.

There is great debate about how the scourge arrived in Canada.

Did it come north with U.S. soldiers shipping out through Canada? The epidemic hit Camp Funston in Kansas in January. Since it was contagious before symptoms first appeared, it spread along rail lines from camp to camp, then to troopships bound for Europe.

Did it arrive with the 94,000 Chinese Labour Corps workers bound for the front lines in Europe, who crossed Canada in sealed cars in March 1918? Cases with similar symptoms—patients turning blue from lack of oxygen and coughing up blood—were recorded in northern China in 1917.
