About Michael K. Barbour

Michael K. Barbour is the Director of Faculty Development and a Professor of Instructional Design for the College of Education and Health Sciences at Touro University California. He has been involved with K-12 online learning in a variety of countries for well over a decade as a researcher, teacher, course designer and administrator. Michael's research focuses on the effective design, delivery and support of K-12 online learning, particularly for students located in rural jurisdictions.

Japanese Emperor Hirohito was long depicted as a naïve pacifist who reluctantly acceded to the wishes of his hawkish military leaders.

But the newly released diaries of one of his closest aides suggest the emperor posthumously known as Shōwa thought war with the West was inevitable and was preparing for it earnestly two months before Japan attacked Pearl Harbor.

Welcome to the New Laurier Centre for the Study of Canada!
The Laurier Centre for Military Strategic and Disarmament Studies (LCMSDS), which has become one of Canada’s largest military history research centres since its founding by Terry Copp and Marc Kilgour, is expanding to become the Laurier Centre for the Study of Canada (LCSC).

The reimagined research centre will facilitate and support original research on the expansive, evolving and contested interpretations of Canada.

War and Society Research to Continue

LCMSDS programming will continue under the banner of the new War and Society collective, including:

  • the annual Canadian Military History Colloquium
  • virtual and in-person public lectures
  • our journal Canadian Military History, published in partnership with the Canadian War Museum
  • the On War & Society podcast
  • battlefield study tours
  • Laurier Military History Archive

Legacy LCMSDS content from canadianmilitaryhistory.ca is still available in the War and Society section of studyofcanada.ca.

Additional Research Subjects and Partners

In addition the legacy programming, LCSC welcomes three new research collectives, which will examine the themes of Policy Connections for Canada, Communities, and Publics and Social Justice.

Each collective is made up of Laurier faculty and graduate students from more than a dozen departments in the Faculty of Arts and Faculty of Liberal Arts, as well as external research fellows from academic and community partners.

Work in these collectives is already well underway, providing high-quality experiential learning and training opportunities for Laurier undergraduate and graduate students. Research in all four collectives is supported through the new Copp Scholars program that has already funded more than 2,500 hours of research assistance from a team of 17 senior undergraduate students.

Once again our US Navy Sea Cadets Corps – Arkansas Division is participating in the Wreaths Across America program at the San Francisco National Cemetery at the Presidio of San Francisco. In addition to participating in the event on December 18, 2021, our cadets are also helping to promote the sponsorship of wreaths.

Individuals can sponsor a wreath for $15, and if you use the link below our cadets will receive $5 from each wreath that people sponsor through them:

So if you would like to sponsor one or more wreaths, I would STRONGLY encourage you to do it through our cadets so that they can benefit from your sponsorship. Are you a Veteran or family member with experience in our Rehabilitation Program? If so, we want to connect with you to hear how we can improve our rehabilitation services. Please reach out by 3 January 2022 to share your thoughts and perspectives.

We are looking for a broad group of Veterans and their families including those who identify as Indigenous, members of a racialized group, LGBTQ2+ and/or persons with a disability to ensure our rehabilitation service delivery is inclusive and equitable.

Over the next several months, you will be invited to virtual discussions in the official language of your choice. Our goal is to understand how proposed changes to the Rehabilitation Program would affect program participants. Sessions will last 30 minutes to an hour.

In your email, please include any accessibility requirements you may have so that we can best support your participation.

Know a Veteran or family member who may want to chat? Tell them about this opportunity too, so that everyone has the chance to participate.
