A look back at Remembrance 2021

An item from the Commonwealth War Graves Commission that may be of interest to members.

Welcome to the CWGC’s latest newsletter.

Remembrance 2021Last week, we were pleased to welcome the return of traditional remembrance events at CWGC cemeteries and memorials around the world. Many of our sites, from Surrey to Singapore, hosted their first larger-scale events since the pandemic began nearly two years ago to mark Armistice Day and Remembrance Sunday.
What are Commonwealth War Graves?

Walk through any of our cemeteries across the world and you’ll see all kinds of different headstones. In our latest blog, Catherine Nell, CWGC’s Commemorations Officer, explains that Commonwealth War Graves aren’t always as straightforward as you may imagine.

Nine First World War soldiers reburied at Tyne Cot

Earlier this week, nine soldiers of the First World War were reburied with full military honours at Tyne Cot Cemetery in Belgium, the world’s largest CWGC cemetery. in the presence of our President, HRH The Duke of Kent. Seven of the casualties are known to have died on 14 October 1917 – and you can read more about them on our website.

Even before the Taliban’s rapid return to power in Afghanistan, most western governments—including Canada—appeared to have abandoned their willingness to engage in peacekeeping, peace-building and/or ‘stabilization’ interventions that involved placing western ‘boots on the ground’ in support of populations who were facing large scale threats of violence. This presentation will consider why that dis-engagement has taken place, and what it means for Canada and especially the Canadian Forces.

The threat of domestic extremism

The threat of domestic extremism

Story by Stephen J. Thorne

Domestic extremists, not foreign terrorists, pose the greatest threat to American security, says a new report that criticizes the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) for failing to adapt to an evolving environment since the 9/11 attacks.

There have been 230 unsuccessful attacks or plots in the United States since New York’s World Trade Center and the Pentagon in Washington were hit in 2001 at a cost of nearly 3,000 lives. Just 28 of the planned attacks were directed by foreign terrorist organizations.
