BDC Capital has launched a new venture capital fund focused on investing in early-stage deep tech companies within Canada. The $200-million will be used to accelerate the development of transformational technologies in a number of sectors including quantum, electronics, photonics, foundational AI and related fields, helping these Canadian innovators in the industries thrive and scale to global success.

Following its US$100-million raise (led by Annie Lamont of Oak HC/FT), the company is now valued at close to US$2-billion. Burnaby-based legal tech company Clio raises US$110-million, pushing it’s valuation to US$1.6-billion. According to the company, this latest Series E round (led by T. Rowe Price & OMERS Growth Equity), establishes Clio as the first legal practice management company globally to reach unicorn status. Alberta’s tech sector is growing! Alberta Enterprise Corporation (C100 Corporate Member) has released the findings of its 2021 Alberta Technology Deal Flow Study, revealing that Alberta is now home to more than 3,000 technology companies, a 233% increase since 2020 and the rate of female founders is 50% higher than the global average.
