Adrift in the Bay of Biscay

Adrift in the Bay of Biscay

Story by Sharon Adams

Just after 7:30 p.m. on St. Patrick’s Day in 1945, survivors of the minesweeper HMCS Guysborough were in frigid Atlantic waters awaiting rescue. About half of them wouldn’t make it.

Guysborough was about 300 kilometres off the coast of France in the Bay of Biscay en route from Lunenburg, N.S., to England when it was hit in the stern by an acoustic torpedo from U-868 just before 7 p.m. on March 17.

No Ordinary History

The Canadian Army has a rich history and has fought heroically in many significant battles throughout history. Canada Army Run celebrates the Canadian Army’s history and continued connection to Canadians.

This year’s Canada Army Run: Virtual theme is UBIQUE – Everywhere. This is appropriate as the virtual event will take place everywhere across the country and there are Canadian Army bases, units and regiments throughout Canada.

No Ordinary Cause

Relief for military family posted during the pandemic:

Mrs. Jones knew something was making learning more difficult for her two children. But with the stress of moving to a new posting during a pandemic, expensive educational assessments seemed far out of reach … until she learned about Support Our Troops.

No Ordinary Partners

Following the success of the 2020 Battle of the Atlantic virtual challenge, the Navy Bike Ride is pleased to present the 2021 Harry DeWolf virtual challenge. Riders are encouraged to register for this free event that will run from June 12 through August 29, 2021. With a goal of 30,000 cumulative rides, cyclists will bike indoors or outdoors, all while respecting the rules of social distancing. Follow along as we chart the course for HMCS Harry DeWolf’s inaugural deployment through Canada’s Arctic and North American waters. Funds raised through this event will go towards the Royal Canadian Naval Benevolent Fund and Support Our Troops.  Register now! Together we ride. Together we make waves.
