DIEPPE 80 YEARS AFTER: THE JUNO BEACH CENTRE’S EXHIBITION FROM DIEPPE TO JUNO

10 August @ 7:30 pm ET

The Dieppe Raid is shrouded in controversy and tragedy. For decades, it dominated Canadians’ collective memory of the war. Considered a tragic failure since 1942, its story is as complex as it is nuanced. The presentation will explore the challenges of putting together an exhibition on a subject of failure in a place of victory like Juno Beach. It will also explore our evolving understanding of the raid, its links to Juno Beach on D-Day and the liberation of Dieppe in September 1944 as well as its place in Canada’s collective memory of the Second World War.

Canada’s History Archive featuring The Beaver

Please note: Some items featured in our newsletters and social media will include links to the Canada’s History Archive. The Beaver magazine was founded, and for decades was published, during eras shaped by colonialism. Concepts such as racial, cultural, or gender equality were rarely, if ever, considered by the magazine or its contributors. In earlier issues, readers will find comments and terms now considered derogatory. Canada’s History Society cautions readers to explore the archive using historical thinking concepts — not only analyzing the content but asking questions of who shaped the content and why.

Egyptian Expeditionary Force in WW1: Battle of Romani talk now available on Vimeo

These recorded talks may be of interest to some of our members.

Good afternoon,
I hope you’re keeping well.
I’ve uploaded our talk from last week, in which I was discussing the Battle of Romani in 1916, onto Vimeo.  For those who couldn’t make it, the link is here:

Battle of Romani.mp4 on Vimeo

Many of our other talks are also up on Vimeo.  I think some of them had been locked so that you had to log into a Vimeo account to view them, but I’ve gone through them all and I think they are all publicly available now.  If you have any problems, please let me know.
Among the videos are the first two episodes in our new ‘shorts’ series.  These are 10-15 minute videos about particular aspects of the EEF or the daily life for those involved, and will be an irregular and occasional series, basically whenever I get the time to record them.  The first one is here, looking at how the EEF coped with the desert conditions in the Sinai:
I hope that the shorter ‘bite-size’ videos will be able to balance convenience with still providing quality information.
All the best,
Stuart Hadaway
