Dear Michael,

On November 11, 1921, an unknown soldier was brought home from the battlefields of France and interred in the plaza of the Memorial Amphitheater.

The Memorial Day Flowers Foundation was selected by the Arlington National Cemetery administration to procure the flowers for a once-in-a-lifetime event commemorating the 100th anniversary of the Tomb of the Unknown Solider.

The commemoration will take place November 9th and 10th, the two days leading up to Veterans Day.  For the first time since the inauguration of the Tomb, visitors will be allowed to walk on the plaza.  Flowers will be made available to every visitor to place at the Tomb.

Vikings settled Newfoundland centuries before Columbus sailed: new research

Story by Stephen J. Thorne

Vikings conclusively settled in Newfoundland nearly 500 years before Christopher Columbus reached the Bahamas, says new research that disproves once and for all the myth that the Italian explorer was the first European to discover the Americas.

By radiocarbon dating wood the explorers harvested at the L’Anse aux Meadows archaeological site in Newfoundland, scientists pinpointed the felling of trees to precisely 1021 AD, long before Columbus dropped anchor in the Caribbean in October 1492.

The U.S. invasion of Grenada

Story by Sharon Adams

The United States invaded Grenada in 1983, its first military action since the Vietnam War. Canada opposed the act alongside the majority of the United Nations.

Grenada gained independence in 1974. In 1979, after a coup, the constitution was suspended and Maurice Bishop’s Marxist-Leninist government took power. Allied to Cuba and the Soviet Union, the country began to significantly beef up its small army, causing U.S. President Ronald Reagan concern over a potential Soviet military build-up in the Caribbean.

Book cover of I Can Only PaintArt of commemoration

The October-November issue of Canada’s History magazine includes an excerpt from I Can Only Paint: The Story of Battlefield Artist Mary Riter Hamilton, by Irene Gammel. Beginning in 1919, Hamilton travelled to devastated towns and battlefields in France and Belgium where Canadian soldiers had been active during the First World War.

At the Somme, Vimy Ridge, and the Ypres Salient, Hamilton endured difficult conditions that included rough shelter, inadequate food, poor weather, and surroundings littered with unexploded shells. Working sometimes with canvas and at others with available materials such as paper, plywood, and cardboard, she nonetheless produced more than three hundred paintings between 1919 and 1922.

Gammel’s book places this period of Hamilton’s work in the context of the artist’s life and in relation to other art and war art. It includes dozens of full-colour reproductions of her paintings as well as maps, photographs, and illustrations. You can also read the excerpt online.

Canada’s History Archive featuring The Beaver

Please note: Some items featured in our newsletters and social media will include links to the Canada’s History Archive. The Beaver magazine was founded, and for decades was published, during eras shaped by colonialism. Concepts such as racial, cultural, or gender equality were rarely, if ever, considered by the magazine or its contributors. In earlier issues, readers will find comments and terms now considered derogatory. Canada’s History Society cautions readers to explore the archive using historical thinking concepts — not only analyzing the content but asking questions of who shaped the content and why.
