Find Peace and Inspiration in ICP Sunday Virtual Concerts

Elijah’s Violin, a family opera ~

by

Meira Warshauer

Based on a Jewish fairy tale, Elijah’s Violin follows young people as they encounter demons, overcome fears and doubts, and discover the liberating power of the heart’s true song. Enjoy with us the delightful performance that took place in the Presidio Chapel in 2019 in this excellent video, replete with captions.

Meira Warshauer’s musical palette is wide, ranging from traditional Jewish prayer modes to minimalist textures with rich melodic contours and from joyful jazz-influenced rhythms to imaginative orchestrations of the natural world.

More than 40 million people displaced in 2020

Story by Stephen J. Thorne

War, violence and so-called natural disasters, many related to climate change, forced 40.5 million people to relocate within their own countries in 2020—the most in more than a decade, the world authority on such movements reported on May 20.

At 30.7 million, disasters accounted for the most displacements, the bulk of them (30 million) weather-related, said the Internal Displacement Monitoring Centre, which has tracked and analyzed the forced relocations of populations since 1998.

Killed holding a white flag

Story by Sharon Adams

After the Second World War, the United Nations voted to divide Palestine, in southern Lebanon, into Jewish and Arab sovereign states, setting the stage for the Arab-Israeli War.

Israel was proclaimed on May 14, 1948, and Arab armies invaded on May 15 in a futile attempt to prevent establishment of the State of Israel.

May BBS Newsletter & Upcoming Events

A monthly newsletter from a service organization in the Bay Area that we do partner with on several events.

In April the BBS provided just under $13,000 in relief. This included two $1,500 Covid19 Grants as well as more traditional assistance in helping a Brit stranded at SFO.
Our most notable case this month involved providing assistance to a woman in her 70s. Ms. H suffered a stroke while she was alone in her apartment. Kaiser reached out to the BBS asking for financial assistance in covering costs for home care after Ms. H returned home. Because she did not have long term health care her ability to remain independent at home was limited. The Relief Committee provided a cash gift, hopefully giving Ms. H and her family a little respite as they assess the longer term implications of how life will now look. We wish her the best as she continues to make progress with her recovery.
We received two applications from essential workers who had contracted Covid19. They both worked at a grocery store and suffered tremendously after being infected by the virus. For one of them, returning to work has been close to impossible. She no longer remembers basic information, is exhausted and is undergoing long term treatment at UCLA. After receiving word that they would receive a Covid19 Grant, one recipient wrote:

I am lost for words and crying at the same time! THANK YOU! It will help so much. Seriously people have no idea how Covid affects your whole life and body.

The BBS worked with the Consulate in San Francisco to help repatriate a young man who was stranded at SFO after missing his connecting flight. He tried to rebook, but because the original booking was made through a 3rd party website, the airline was only willing to refund the 3rd party. He couldn’t afford to pay for a one way ticket to the UK and was also unaware of the required Covid test kit package needed to book ahead of arrival. The BBS helped by quickly paying for a new flight and the Covid test kit package.
We continue to receive ongoing requests for assistance. Many of the cases are not always caused by Covid but the circumstances are made worse as the pandemic continues to touch all levels of society. As always, thank you for your donations and support as the BBS continues to provide relief to Brits in need.

Join our private Canadian Expats community

Another item from one of our fellow Canadian organizations in California.  Note that while this network is being sponsored by the Canadians in Orange County, it is open to any Canadian expat in the United States.  As individuals from other geographic areas join, group members will need to be recruited to moderate the activities of that geographic group within the network.

Canadian Expat Private Network

The Canadians in Orange County organization has been around since 2009 and we are thrilled to be bringing you another way to connect with fellow Canadians, locally and online.

With all of the noise on public social media, and based on feedback from our recent survey, we are launching a new private network that is focused on Canadian Expat topics and bringing us together to celebrate.

To start with, you’ll find it easy to network with others who share similar interests. This will be your place to let your Canadian pride shine, by creating a bio that talks about where you are from in Canada, when you moved here, what you would like to get out of meeting fellow expats, and how you can help others.

Join us today, and invite all of your Canadian friends living abroad!
