RCAF Association Member Harold Verner Soderlund Turning 100

An item from the Royal Canadian Air Force Association that we would encourage you to participate in.

Your fellow RCAF Association member Harold Verner Soderlund will turn 100 on 21 April 2021.

His fellow 432 (Algoma) Wing members in Sault Ste Marie are inviting all of you to send a birthday card and/or birthday wishes in time for Harold’s celebrations.

Harold is a Second World War RCAF veteran and former Prisoner-of-War, having flown with the 603 (City of Edinburgh) Squadron out of Libya. Soderlund survived being shot down by an enemy aircraft, floating for two days in the sea after a hospital ship passed him by, eventually captured by the enemy and transported by plane, rail and truck from one detention area to another, poorly fed and always under the watchful eye of his captors before finally being liberated and returning home to Canada.

Please send correspondence to:

John Hooper, 133 Finn’s Bay Rd. N., Echo Bay, ON, P0S 1C0 or e-mail hooperjc52 “at” gmail.com with your birthday cards/wishes for Harold Soderlund.

RBLI helps Design Museum celebrate the work of Margeret Calvert OBE

Royal British Legion Industries have recently given their services for the Design Museum’s celebration of the work of leading graphic designer and Tommy Club Founding Patron Margaret Calvert OBE, renowned for the UK’s road signage system, signing for the rail network and airports, and for the typeface used on the government website, gov.uk.

Margaret Calvert OBE was a leading member of the team commissioned to redesign the road sign system in 1960s, creating many of the iconic symbols still used to this day including ‘Roadworks’, and ‘Children’, the two signs which have been recreated for this exhibition by veterans working in RBLI’s social enterprise, Britain’s Bravest Manufacturing Company (BBMC)

Margaret Calvert was delighted with the exhibition and said “The signs and displays looked great, so a huge thank you from me to you, Simon, and to RBLI. Everybody seemed very pleased at the opening. It did look impressive.”  Rachel Hajek, Assistant Curator at the Design Museum added: “We are very grateful for the help that RBLI and Buchanan Computing were able to provide with the traffic signs and other graphics for our Margaret Calvert: Woman at work display.”

These halls weren’t meant to echo!

An item from one of our fellow veterans organizations in the Bay Area.

Dear Michael Barbour,
We consider the membership and staff of Marines’ Memorial a family, a family with a rich history and a prosperous future. We have an amazing team, with many of the staff dedicating a majority of their professional lives to the Club and its membership through decades of service.
As the Club prepares to celebrate our 75th anniversary this year, we are hopeful much of the world will be healed and we will have the opportunity to appropriately celebrate in “grand style” when we reach 10 November 2021! Of course, right now, the Club, the staff and the incredible City By The Bay is a slight shadow of its former self. Our doors are open, but safety limitations allow for a minimum of services, which now includes Hotel accommodations for essential travel and online-only membership events like Leading From the Front.
Fortunately, no one faces this challenge alone. United as a family, both membership and the team, we will conquer our current challenges and move forward to rebuild and continue our mission of honoring the legacy of military service.
As I walk the quiet halls of this incredible Living Memorial, I’m flooded with memories of joyous celebrations, world-class events, mission-driven support programs and, most importantly, the membership and donors who consider this little corner of San Francisco their second home.
Without the dedication and generous support of our loyal membership through these trying times, the Club’s future would be in doubt and our Marines’ Memorial family would be challenged to survive. I pledge to you that our team here is working diligently on a full recovery, preparing to introduce services and programs as soon as possible. With the current challenges of the pandemic, the road may be slow, but as a family, we’re headed in the right direction. We will succeed … we will recover … we are the Marines’ Memorial family.
Finally, we just wanted to let you know how much we miss you! These halls weren’t meant to echo. When you are ready and able to return, we can’t wait to welcome you back.
With our sincere appreciation,
Michael Allen (General Manager) and the Marines’ Memorial team
