Marking the Legion's Centenary
Marking a Century
of Legion Service

As the Legion’s 100th anniversary year continues, July 17 marks a significant date in our shared history. This month’s Branch update includes timely reminders, resources, and opportunities to help Branches mark the occasion, share the Legion’s story, support our Veteran community, and continue honouring Canada’s Fallen. Every Branch has a role to play in this historic anniversary year and in helping Canadians connect with the Legion’s century of service.

With July 17 approaching, Branches are encouraged to continue preparations to mark the Legion’s 100th anniversary. Branches may choose to host a commemorative ceremony, hold an open house, or take part in other activities that recognize this historic milestone and connect with their communities.

As part of the national Don’t Forget to Remember initiative, Branches will soon receive a kit containing sticky notes, display materials, instructions, and return packaging. Branches are encouraged to invite members and visitors to write messages of Remembrance that will be collected and included in the national commemorative mural honouring the Fallen. Completed notes are to be returned by July 31.

Details on the initiative are available at: portal.legion.ca/centenary-2026. For questions or additional information, please contact remember@legion.ca.

Help Care for War Graves in Canada
Commonwealth War Graves

Royal Canadian Legion members can help honour the fallen of the Commonwealth by joining the Commonwealth War Graves Commission’s National Volunteer Program. On June 1, the program launched in Quebec and New Brunswick, completing its national footprint. Volunteers are needed in Quebec, New Brunswick, and in rural communities across the country.

CWGC Volunteers visit their assigned war graves in local cemeteries twice a year to report on their condition, and if needed, perform light cleaning using approved methods. By giving a little of your time, you can help care for war graves and ensure the stories of the fallen are never forgotten.

Strengthening the Future of the Legion
Strengthening the
Future of the Legion

This spring has been a landmark moment for Legion membership, with strong growth being seen nationwide. Now is the time to build on that success by connecting with new members and keeping them actively involved at the Branch level. Consider simple ways to engage—host a welcome or orientation night, pair new members with long-time members, invite them to volunteer on a committee or at an event, or create informal social opportunities to help them feel part of the Branch community. Small efforts like these go a long way in building lasting connections and strengthening the future of the Legion.

Legion Membership Surpasses 300,000!

Last week, Legion membership surpassed 300,000—up 24% (+58,700) from last year—achieving the national target set by delegates at the 2018 Convention.

New member growth has been especially strong, with a record 82,000 new members (+259% over the same period last year). This milestone reflects the outstanding efforts of Branches in welcoming and engaging members.

Let’s keep the momentum going—continue reaching out, engaging new members, building connections, and encouraging renewals as we grow toward 2027 and beyond.

How to Handle Poppy Funds for CAF Members
How to handle Poppy Fund assistance to currently serving members of the Canadian Armed Forces

There are administrative orders and directives set by the Canadian Armed Forces to address currently serving members with financial situations. Poppy Funds may not be granted to a currently serving member without guidance from a SISIP financial counsellor. If a currently serving member applies for financial assistance with you or your Branch, the best course of action is to re direct the member to the SISIP financial counsellor on base, the military family resource centre or their local CAF chaplain’s office. Should the financial counsellor on base deem that Poppy Funds would benefit the member, the SISIP counsellor will reach out to the appropriate command office to discuss the case.

Please ensure the Branch Service Officer and Branch Poppy Fund administrator review the full details in this pdf.

Hockey seeps into virtually every aspect of Canadian life. The military and its heritage are no exceptions. The game and the country's armed forces have been tied since Canada's earliest days, from one of the first games on record in 1886 to the droves of players, pro and amateur, who volunteered for the Great War. Still more exchanged hockey sweater for military uniform in the Second World War, and the pursuit of pucks has been a welcome distraction for those in service all along.

Juno Beach Centre launches capital campaign
In early October 2022, Veterans Affairs Canada, Canadian and French governments, and local authorities secured an agreement to protect the Juno Beach Centre from a proposed condominium development. The Royal Canadian Legion offered vital support during this difficult time, standing in support of the Centre and spreading the call to action among its membership. To support the next phases of growth and development of this commemorative site, the Juno Beach Centre is launching a capital campaign.
The main priority for the newly acquired land is Project Concordia. The initiative will:
  • Help the Juno Beach Centre take better advantage of its changed surroundings and enhance accessibility for convenience and safety;
  • Preserve the natural landscape of the local section of Juno Beach by restoring the surrounding dune lands
  • Enhance the memorial park surrounding the Centre as a space for reflection and learning; to pass the torch of memory to future generations.

Legion Equity, Diversity and Inclusion committee sets initial goals
The Legion’s recently formed Equity, Diversity and Inclusion committee is currently discussing how the organization can commit to these important principles at all levels. It is a collaborative effort, beginning with this short introduction to explain what the committee plans to accomplish.
The committee will help the Legion ensure the principles of Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) are an integral part of its culture. It will support members, Branches, Provincial Commands/Special Sections and Dominion Command build EDI plans or initiatives, to benefit our members, staff, and guests. Its goal is to ensure all Veterans, members, and guests, regardless of their age, ethnicity, race, nationality, disability, economic status, gender identity, or sexual orientation feel welcome, supported, and included.
The Royal Canadian Legion is committing to create an even more supportive environment for colleagues internally and for those we connect with externally. It is about remembering to treat everyone with respect.
Over the coming months, and working with all levels of the organization, the EDI committee will create a straightforward plan, and develop tools to help enact EDI principles within the Legion environment in tangible ways.
Stay tuned!

Help promote the Veteran and Family Well‑being Fund
Veterans Affairs Canada launched a new call for applications for the Veteran and Family Well‑being Fund.
Across the country, organizations are developing new and innovative ways to improve the well-being of Veterans and their families. Created in 2018, the Veteran and Family Well-being Fund provides organizations doing this important work with funds to implement initiatives and conduct research in areas like Veteran homelessness, mental health, the transition to life after service, and more. A portion of the funding from this call will be allocated to organizations and initiatives that support Veteran health, research, employment, as well as women, Indigenous, and 2SLGBTQI+ Veterans.
Please share this opportunity with organizations in your local communities that work in these fields and could benefit from this funding to support Veterans and their families. Applications will be accepted until Friday July 12, 2024.

When talking about the lapel Poppy publicly, describe them as being offered or distributed for any donation people can give. They are not sold, which implies a specific price they must pay.
