News from the North

75 years ago today, roughly 14,000 Canadians were among the nearly 150,000 Allied troops who parachuted or landed in Normandy, France on June 6, 1944 – D-Day. D-Day was an important marker in our defence partnership, which is as strong as ever today.

Security:

  • Last week, the Embassy commemorated Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) Day. Did you know hundreds of Canadians in uniform are serving across the United States? Read more about ways Canadian and American military personnel are keeping North America safe.
  • This year, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) turns 70. Since 1949, Canada has been a strong and reliable member, contributing to international peace, security, and stability. Read our new fact sheet about our contributions to this important Alliance.

Energy and the Environment:

  • Canada is the United States’ most secure and reliable energy supplier. In fact, our energy trade accounts for $116 billion. 5.24 million barrels of crude oil and petroleum products and 10.08 billion cubic feet of natural gas cross our borders each day. The Center for Strategic and International Studies mapped our energy partnership to show each state’s energy relationship with Canada.
  • In case you missed, the Embassy of Canada has been awarded the U.S. Green Building Council’s LEED Platinum certification – the highest distinction within the LEED rating system. In a video, our Deputy Ambassador explains why we are so proud of this achievement and how it fits with a broader Government of Canada commitment to transition to a clean energy future.
