Back in early March, with a cold snap coming and the Russian advance stalled outside the Ukrainian capital of Kyiv, military observers warned Vladimir Putin’s invading army could be facing a different sort of trouble.

A column of tanks and heavy weaponry was lined up for 65 kilometres. It was low on food and fuel and already facing sub-zero temperatures after dark.

The South African War, popularly known as the Second Boer War, ushered in the 20th century. It was Britain’s second kick at the can—they’d lost the First Boer War in the 1880s.

The British ostensibly wanted to protect the trade route to India by controlling territory around the Cape of Good Hope in southern Africa; controlling the region’s gold and diamond resources wouldn’t hurt, either.
