The Royal Canadian Legion proudly commemorated its 100th anniversary at the National War Memorial in Ottawa today, joined by invited dignitaries, Veterans, Legion members, and the public. Incorporated on July 17, 1926, the country’s largest Veteran support and community service organization recalled highlights of its history of Remembrance.

Today marks a historical milestone!
Exactly 100 years ago, on July 17, 1926, the Canadian Legion was formally incorporated. For a century, we have stood as Canada’s fiercest advocate for Veterans, of Remembrance, and the backbone of communities from coast to coast to coast.

SHARE YOUR MESSAGE OF REMEMBRANCE
Remembrance isn’t limited to one day. It lives in the stories we carry, the names we speak, and the gratitude we pass from one generation to the next.
To mark 100 years of The Royal Canadian Legion’s commitment to Remembrance, we’re inviting Canadians to come together in a shared tribute. Write a message about what Remembrance means to you, share a name or memory, or leave a few words of thanks.
Each handwritten note will become part of a commemorative mural honouring service, sacrifice, and the memory of the Fallen.
Branch 25 (San Francisco) sent each of its members coloured post-it notes to allow them to participate. Members of the Branch were also present at Canadian ex-pat events throughout the Bay Area over the past few weeks.

On the Poppy’s 100th year as a symbol of Remembrance, the Royal Canadian Mint / Monnaie royale canadienne is offering this wreath to honour those who have served our country and those who continue to help advance peace around the world.
Theirs is a legacy of great trials and sacrifice, but also of hope and heroism. We will never forget their bravery, and with this wreath of forget-me-nots and red poppies, we gratefully acknowledge their service while honouring the memory of the fallen.

Anniversary of “In Flanders Fields”
Today is the 103rd anniversary of John McCrae writing the poem “In Flander’s Field.”
Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae composed “In Flanders Fields” at the battlefront during the second battle of Ypres in Belgium.
In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place: and in the sky
The larks still bravely singing fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the dead: Short days ago,
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved: and now we lie
In Flanders fields!
Take up our quarrel with the foe
To you, from failing hands, we throw
The torch: be yours to hold it high
If ye break faith with us who die,
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
