BDC CAPITAL’S $200 MILLION DEEP TECH VENTURE FUND
BDC Capital has launched a new venture capital fund focused on investing in early-stage deep tech companies within Canada. The $200-million will be used to accelerate the development of transformational technologies in a number of sectors including quantum, electronics, photonics, foundational AI and related fields, helping these Canadian innovators in the industries thrive and scale to global success.
Congratulations to Thomas Park, formerly BDC Capital’s Vice President, Operations and Strategy, who will be leading the Deep Tech Venture Fund. Also on the team are BDC veterans Duncan Stewart, Charles Lespérance, Robert Simon (C100 Charter Member), Jackson Hamilton and Katherine Nicanorova.

Toronto-based Clearco (formerly Clearbanc) hits unicorn status! A big congratulations to the Clearco team as well as C100 Members and Charter Members Andrew D’Souza, Michele Romanow and Curt Sigfstead. Following its US$100-million raise (led by Annie Lamont of Oak HC/FT), the company is now valued at close to US$2-billion. Burnaby-based legal tech company Clio raises US$110-million, pushing it’s valuation to US$1.6-billion. According to the company, this latest Series E round (led by T. Rowe Price & OMERS Growth Equity), establishes Clio as the first legal practice management company globally to reach unicorn status. Archangel Network of Funds has closed its first $10-million funding round for its network of early-stage funds. Run by a group of investors from the Toronto-Waterloo corridor, the network plans to invest roughly $100,000 per deal across three funds.

Alberta’s tech sector is growing! Alberta Enterprise Corporation (C100 Corporate Member) has released the findings of its 2021 Alberta Technology Deal Flow Study, revealing that Alberta is now home to more than 3,000 technology companies, a 233% increase since 2020 and the rate of female founders is 50% higher than the global average.
Forbes’ list of the “Top 25 Machine Learning Startups to Watch in 2021 Based on Crunchbase” includes Toronto-based Boast.AI, co-founded and led by Alex Popa & Lloyed Lobo (C100 Member). Toronto was ranked as the 6th most popular location for A.I. & machine learning startups globally.
MaRS and RBC (C100 Foundational Partner) launch the RBC Women in Cleantech Accelerator. This 12-month program is supported through the RBC Tech for Nature initiative and applications are open until June 11 and the first cohort will be announced in September.
