News and events for the Bay Area Canadian community

Note these up-coming events from one of our fellow Canadian organizations in the Bay Area.

Also, the Royal Canadian Legion will once again unofficially begin our annual Poppy Campaign at the Canadian Thanksgiving with the DML and UC Berkeley’s Canadian Studies.

We’ve [kinda] moved!

Check out our new virtual digs at the Digital Moose Lounge website where you’ll find our usual helpful stuff: local and online events of interest, resources for Canadians living in the region, and opportunities to get involved. If you have anything to share (events of interest, Canadian-owned/managed businesses in the region, Canadian products, or even high quality images from the DML’s past 21 years), please reach us here.  Special thanks to our own mighty moose web experts, Wendy & Siva & Robb, for all their work on this over the past year!

Stanford Live is live again! Check out what’s coming in September – and November!

October 29th and 30th

iskwē

acākosīk

A Juno Award-winning electro-pop artist, iskwē, which translates to “blue sky woman,” spotlights the importance and plight of Indigenous peoples and territories in Canada. Her command of music styles includes jazz, R&B, industrial pop-rock, post-rock, and trip-hop. Centuries of historic injustice, systemic racism, and environmental degradation fuel her powerful lyrics.

And, don’t miss out on your chance to see William Prince in November! Both of these artists were featured for Canada Day 2020 when the DML and Stanford Live partnered to bring these artists to our community, in conversation. Now, you can see them both perform, in person!

New Canadians in the Bay Area

The Consulate General of Canada in San Francisco has welcomed two new staff members this summer: Marie Alnwick, who is leading the Foreign Policy and Diplomacy Service team, and Simon Pomel, who is leading the Trade Commissioner Service team. Both have recently completed assignments in Ottawa and are settling into their new homes in the Bay Area.

Marie was born in Ottawa and raised in Southwestern Ontario, living in Windsor, London and Toronto. She joined the Foreign Service in 2009 and was previously posted to Canada’s Embassy in South Korea.

Simon was born in France and grew up in Gaspésie in Eastern Quebec. He worked at Montreal-based software company Invera prior to joining the Canadian federal government. Simon previously was posted to Canada’s diplomatic missions in Zambia and Jordan.

Marie and Simon are both looking forward to meeting fellow Bay Area Canadians at future DML events!
