On the morning of September 11, 2001, thousands of men and women arrived at the Pentagon expecting an ordinary Tuesday. Servicemembers reported for duty, civilian employees settled into their offices, and colleagues greeted one another in the hallways. Nearby, passengers boarded American Airlines Flight 77 for a flight across the country. They were mothers and fathers, husbands and wives, sons and daughters, friends and colleagues.

At 9:37 a.m., their lives became forever intertwined. When Flight 77 struck the Pentagon, 184 innocent people were killed—125 inside the building and 59 passengers and crew aboard the aircraft. Behind that number are 184 individual stories. The youngest was just three years old; the oldest was 71. Among those lost were servicemembers and civilians, public servants and veterans, parents and children.

Twenty-five years later, we have a responsibility to remember their names and the lives behind them. On the 10th floor of the Marines’ Memorial Club & Hotel, the names of the servicemembers who lost their lives at the Pentagon on September 11 are permanently displayed. They stand as a solemn reminder that the lives lost that morning were not simply part of history—they were people who served our nation, and their sacrifice deserves to be remembered for generations to come.

At the Marines’ Memorial Association & Foundation, this is what it means to be a Living Memorial. We do more than remember the past; we preserve the names, stories, service, and sacrifice of those who came before us so that future generations understand the price that has been paid in service to our country.
